Doug Bowen provided a great lunch for the twenty-five
members attending the lecture and meeting. During lunch members enjoyed a slide show presentation of NODS member's
gardens, seedlings, and events from 2008 prepared by Rae Dickens. Many members also shared some great side dishes and
treats.
Speaker
Mark Druckenbrod spoke to the Society about garden soil and how to prepare a daylily bed. He led an informative
discussion on soil topics including types of soils, the importance of soil testing, man-made nutrients, organic materials,
and composting.
Mark also donated an abundance of seeds from his garden to the Society. Members
enjoyed selecting many great crosses. The balance of the seeds were placed in a seed bank which is available to Members.
Mark also donated some Larry Grace seedlings which were given away.
Ralph Haehn also donated many
of his seedlings which members were able to take home and enjoy. Everyone who was interested was able to go home with
seed and plants!
Doug Bowen called the business meeting to order.
Plant Sale
Rae Dickens spoke about the 2009 plant sale. She reminded everyone about
the change in the rebate program in relationship to the sale. She distributed a list of tasks that need to be filled
for the sale. She also discussed a new flyer that was being created about deer prevention tips and invited members to
add tips of their own. She also discussed our relationship with the Penitentiary Glen train enthusiasts and offering
train customers a coupon for the sale.
Kent State Garden/NODS Trip
Jan Teague updated everyone on the Kent State plant donation. She also mentioned that she would not be leading
a NODS trip in the coming year but encourages another NODS member to step up and organize a trip. Jan also discussed
the AHS membership brochures.
Winter Banquet
Doug Bowen then discussed the winter banquet to be held on the third or fourth Saturday in January at Punderson Manor.
This year the theme is "The 50's". Members agreed to duplicate the deluxe buffet we had last year.
The dinner will be free for all NODS members in good standing. Any guests that come with members will pay $15 for the
dinner. A meeting will be held sometime in November for those that want to be on the banquet planning committee.
Election Of Officers
Doug lead a discussion on officer elections for
2009. He asked if there were any volunteers. There were none. He then stated that all four current officers
were willing to continue for another year. Doug then asked if there were any nominations. Rae Dickens was nominated
by Kelly Anne, seconded by Barb. A lengthy discussion began on By-laws, the Secretary, Editor, and Webmaster position,
and about a member holding more than one office. It was decided to vote on the Secretary position and then to create
a committee to review the By-laws. Rae Dickens was voted in as Secretary. The President, Vice President, and Treasurer
remained the same. The Editor position will stay vacant at this time. Delmar Dickens volunteered to be the Liaison
and was seconded by all.
Doug volunteered to be chairman for the By-laws Committee.
He suggested meeting on the second or third Sunday in November at 1:00 at the Chesterland Arabica. Kelly Anne, Mary
S., Gigi, and Julie volunteered for the committee.
The meeting was adjourned.
