Headline News: Members Get 50% Rebate On Daylily Purchases Within Region 2!

During the Winter Banquet an amendment was proposed and adopted that all active NODS members (members that participated in at least two functions in 2006) are eligible for a one time 50% rebate on daylilies purchased from Region 2 growers prior to the Summer Sale.
The Stipulations for these rebates are as follows:
  • Maximum refund $100
  • All receipts must be originals listing the daylilies purchased and must be turned in at the same time.  Only one check per member.
  • Rebates must be submitted to the Treasurer by June 30, 2007
  • Rebates will be given only for daylilies purchased from Region 2 growers.

The goal of this program is for members to expand their purchasing power for higher end daylilies, to purchase daylilies not found in local gardens and support Region 2 growers.

The program will be evaluated at the end of the season to see if new daylilies have been introduced to NE Ohio gardens and that will some day make it to our annual sale.

Winter Banquet: A Gambling Experience

As always, the annual Winter Banquet at Punderson was a huge success.  This year's dinner had a Las Vegas atmosphere.   Members were given four poker chips upon entering with the option to purchase more.  They had the chance to spin the roulette wheel, play blackjack against a skilled dealer or even try their hand a poker.  All winnings could be turned in for credit towards this year's summer daylily sale.

As our guests enjoyed munching on appetizers and conversing with other members, some tried their luck at the games.  As the games were played, raffle tickets were sold and everyone was bidding on our silent auction.

The meal this year consisted of glazed apple pork loin, forest chicken (which had a wonderful raisin and cashew sauce), rice pilaf, green beans, salad and dinner rolls.  Saving the best for last was dessert: Oreo cheese cake and carrot cake.

The silent auction and raffle produced the biggest winter banquet profit this year thanks to the extremely generous vendors and NODS members.  To prizes included a $200 gift certificate from Eagle Creek, three $100 gift certificates from Crintonic Gardens, two $100 perennial packages from Bluestone, a bed and breakfast at Punderson Manor.  There were hand made quilts, beautifully filled baskets, wind chimes, daylilies and more.  The list could go on and on.

Between dinner and the raffle was the business meeting covering many items including initiating the NODS Garden Tour.  Most of the items discussed can be found on the following pages.

Your Garden Is Wanted Dead Or Alive!

Summer Garden Tour Participation Forms were handed out at the Winter Banquet.  NODS is looking for members that would like to display their gardens to the public during the peak week(s) in July.  We are creating suggested routes with maps of the gardens in specific areas that NODS members and the public could spend a few hours and see as many gardens as possible.  This would include the suggested route and the approximate time needed in each yard.

The only requirement is that each garden has at least one daylily blooming and that it is maintained properly (remember the only week free gardens are artificial ones and no one is asking for that!).

If you were not present at the Winter Banquet and are interested, forms can be obtained from Doug at 440.729.7531 or by emailing him at digdug12084@aol.com (make sure NODS is entered as the subject heading in the e-mail.)

Summer Daylily Sale Scheduled for July 7th and 8th

The annual Daylily Sale and Scape Event is scheduled for July 7th and 8th at Penitentiary Glen.  Rae and Delmar Dickens will be heading this great event.  They are asking for your help in supplying them your donation list as soon as possible.

Please include the name of the cultivar and the number of fans to be donated.  It is extremely time consuming to find the pictures and create the computerized labels, so I hope every one will be considerate and forward your list ASAP.  We are also asking for a list of daylilies you would most likely buy if they were available at the sale.  As usual, we will be purchasing plants for the sale from a Region 2 grower and your input would be greatly appreciated.

Evansville, Indiana Region 2 Meeting

The Region 2 Summer Meeting will be held this year in Evansville, Indiana. There was some interest at the Winter Banquet for checking into renting a passenger van for the event.  The approximate drive time with one stop is 8.5 hours.

The only rental location in Cleveland had 12 and 15 passenger vans, both at the same price.  Its $99 per day and $0.25 a mile over 100 miles a day.  With gas it is estimated the total cost of the van would be $900.  It might be cheaper to car pool.  The cost for the one day garden tour and the Friday and Saturday night dinners would be approximately as follows:

$100 registration, $180 for two nights (single), van rental $100.  Total of $390.  This does not include food expenses.  The above costs are extimated with the following schedule:

Depart 6:00 AM Friday; Return 6:00 PM Sunday

If anyone is interested in the van rental/car pooling proposal please contact me by March 1, 2007. Doug (440.729.7531)
